COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This 1-day onsite and 1/2 day online course is designed to provide participants with the latest evidence for the evaluation, medical and surgical management, and rehabilitation of temporomandibular disorders. Course content will be presented from the perspectives of a physician and physical therapists who specialize in the treatment of TMD. Physician content will include medical management of patients with TMD. Rehabilitation content will consist of the latest evidence in categorizing patients with TMD and prescribing a rehabilitation program that reflects the most effective methods for treatment. There will be both a pre-test and a post-test on the material presented.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Gain working knowledge of the Anatomy and Biomechanics of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and Muscles of Mastication (MOM) in order to make differential diagnosis.
- Perform a complete and comprehensive evaluation of the TMJ and MOM to develop a differential diagnosis and recognize when referral to another clinician is necessary; design and implement an appropriate TMD rehabilitation program based on the latest clinical and scientific information, and use appropriate outcome tools to document progress.
- Understand the indications and techniques of operative and non-operative medical interventions to establish a prognosis, facilitate communication, and successfully treat the Temporomandibular Disorders (including both Clinical and Home treatment approaches and techniques).
- To establish and understand the inter-play between TMD, Cervical, and Postural pathologies that make caring for this population a challenge.

About the Instructors:
Thomas Sollecito, MD
Dr. Sollecito is Professor and Chair of Oral Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Professor of Oral Medicine in Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is also an attending physician in Oral Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a University Associate at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He completed his DMD degree program at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine where he graduated with honors. He is a fellow in Hospital Dentistry and a Diplomate in Special Care Dentistry and a Diplomate in Oral Medicine. Formerly, he was the Director of the Oral Medicine Residency Program and formerly served as the Interim Dean at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has served as President of the Eta Chapterof OKU and President of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is a Section Editor of the Compendium Journal, and is a reviewer for the Journal of the American Dental Association and is presently serving on the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs. He has authored numerous papers and chapters related to various topics in Oral Medicine.

Timothy Bayruns, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS
Dr. Bayruns is the Spine Orthopaedic Team Leader with Penn Therapy and Fitness, Good Shepherd Penn Partners. He has over 26 years of clinical and mentorship experience. He is a certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapist Specialties, and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist as recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is an adjunct faculty member at Thomas Jefferson University specializing in spine and TMD education. He is active in clinical research and has published in the Orthopedic Section Physical Therapy Practice Journal.

Diana Hearn, PT, DPT, OCS
Dr. Hearn is Musculoskeletal Team Leader for Penn Therapy and Fitness, Good Shepherd Penn Partners (GSPP) at Penn Medicine at Radnor. She has over 30 years of clinical experience in the Physical Therapy profession. She has dedicated continual post professional development as follows: Orthopedic Certified Clinical Specialist; APTA CI credentialing program; and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Arcadia University. She has completed manual therapy course certification classes from University of St Augustine. Her special interests in patient treatmemt include manual therapy with a focus on management of spinal and TMD dysfunction. She is team leader for TMD program development within GSPP establishing clinical care guidelines and competency training for staff. She is adjunct faculty in the Department of PT at Arcadia University, and guest lectures in local PT programs in TMD education. She is currently active in TMD research in connection with the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. She has also presented on TMD at PPTA and APTA conferences. |
