Evidence-based Use of Electrical Stimulation and Therapeutic Ultrasound for Physical and Occupational Therapists

Course Description:

This 8-hour course will provide you with the concepts of electrical stimulation and ultrasound and a thorough understanding of these treatment modalities administered by physical and occupational therapists in the clinical setting.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course participants will : 



1. Identify information and resources necessary to address a clinical problem and demonstrate effective clinical problem solving skills.
2. Participate in the critical analysis of current research and professional literature.
3. Identify the physiologic effects of applied physical agents on the human body.
4. Describe the indications and contraindications for the use of applied physical agents.
5. Select appropriate physical agents and demonstrate safe and competent use in the administration of therapy treatments.
6. Describe the rationale for the choice and use of specific agents in the treatment of certain conditions.
7. Propose appropriate dosage, duration, intensity, area to be treated, and result desired for various physical agents.
8. Integrate the use of physical agents as on component of a treatment plan.
9. Evaluate the agent's effectiveness and the patient's physiological response during treatment with various physical agents.

Modules include:

  1. Electrophysiology - Introduction, waveforms, instrumentation, safety
  2. Muscle re-education, Edema management, Wound healing
  3. Pain management and iontophoresis
  4. Therapeutic Ultrasound and Phonophoresis

About the Instructor:

Dawn Gulick, PhD, PT, ATC, CSCS is a Professor of Physical Therapy at Widener University in Chester, PA. Her areas of expertise are orthopedics, sports medicine, modalities, & medical screening.

As a clinician, she has owned a private orthopedic/sports medicine practice. She has also provided athletic training services from the middle school to the elite Olympic level.  As a member of the Olympic Sports Medicine Society, Dr. Gulick has provided medical coverage at numerous national, international, Olympic, & Paralympic events.

Dr. Gulick is co-owner of Therapeutic Articulations, LLC which developed iOrtho App for Android & Apple devices.

As a scholar, Dr. Gulick is the author of 4 books (Ortho Notes, Screening Notes, Sports Notes, Mobilization Notes), 4 book chapters, & over 30 peer-reviewed publications in 20 different journals.  She has over 40 professional & civic presentations.  Dr. Gulick is the recipient of 9 modest research grants.  Dr. Gulick is the Chapter President of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

Dr. Gulick earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Lock Haven University (Lock Haven, PA), a Master of Physical Therapy from Emory University (Atlanta, GA), & a Doctorate of Philosophy in Exercise Physiology from Temple University (Philadelphia, PA).  As a licensed physical therapist, she has direct access authorization.  She is also a certified strength & conditioning specialist.
